Clients are currently booking consecutive interpreters as well – under strict hygiene conditions and only for small groups of people, such as bilateral meetings.
However, wearing a medical face mask does not make interpreting any easier. With this technique, which requires a great deal of concentration and good hearing anyway, speech intelligibility is significantly reduced. This is especially true in rooms with adverse room acoustical conditions.
When planning such meetings, it is therefore advisable to have a small but well-ventilated room, try to keep background and traffic noise to a minimum, and maintain physical distancing with other people while briefly talking without the mask.
Covid is demanding a lot of flexibility from all of us – both in our private and professional lives.
