AI and interpreting

AI has changed our everyday lives. Artificial intelligence has become indispensable in our professional lives, and especially in our private lives. Most of us take it for granted; we ask our smartphones to set the timer, let fitness trackers count our steps and analyse our sleep, have Netflix recommend movies according to our viewing habits, and turn on the sat-nav to get to our destination.
Professionally, I also sometimes use AI when preparing for an assignment, provided I have the consent of my clients (and that isn’t all that common!). Of course, I never use AI without subsequent critical review and correction, as AI-generated texts or glossaries often contain incorrect words, hallucinations, or even omissions.
For this blog post I also used AI and asked ChatGPT to generate a matching image. I think it reflects the current situation quite well: artificial intelligence can support human interpreters – but it is not mature enough to be used on its own.
