New voluntary role as VKD mentor

Last weekend, the 23rd Annual Members’ Meeting of the VKD Professional Association of Conference Interpreters took place in Fulda. In addition to the official agenda, reports from the executive board and committee members, discussing motions, and electing new board members, the new cohort of the VKD Mentoring Programme was introduced. The aim of the programme is to facilitate young colleagues’ entry into professional life as freelance conference interpreters. To this end, experienced conference interpreters support junior colleagues as mentors, accompanying them over a period of two years. During this time, mentors provide guidance and practical support on all matters relevant to the profession.
Supporting the next generation is close to my heart, and since this weekend I have therefore joined the mentoring programme. Because I know: no one finds their way in this profession on their own. For me, mentoring means listening, giving honest advice and offering orientation. Even in difficult times.
As a conference interpreter, I am familiar with the questions, doubts and decisions that shape this profession, from entering the field and positioning oneself in the market to dealing with AI and ongoing change. Within the framework of the mentoring programme, I want to create space for exactly these topics.
Mentoring within the VKD is voluntary. But its impact goes far beyond individual conversations, benefiting the next generation, our profession as a whole, and the quality of our work.
I am very much looking forward to open, conversations at eye-level and to new perspectives and ideas!
