Did you know that the German city of Essen has 376 kilometres of cycle tracks and is the third greenest city in Germany? Now, Essen has officially won the title European Green Capital for 2017. Over the course of the year, countless events and citizens’ projects will take place, including the official opening and Culture and Families Festival in the Grugapark presenting light shows, theatre and dance. Together with my colleague I had the pleasure and the honour to help, amongst others, EU Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella with simultaneous translation during the opening ceremony on January 21.
