I had another assignment this week and worked from an interpreting hub via the Cisco WebEx video conferencing platform. Despite a complex setup, interpreting was made possible thanks to the well-trained technicians on site and hard-wired interpreting consoles with knobs and buttons, just as we’ve known them from before Covid hit. With WebEx, as with MS Teams, you need to open a second meeting with a separate meeting link to enable language interpretation. In this case, English translation was broadcast to Meeting 2, while in Meeting 1 the floor feed (and translation channel) was German. In future, however, it may be possible to just set up one meeting, because for a short while now, WebEx also offers an interpretation feature, which I was able to try out myself in a webinar last weekend. It is promising, offers a relay function and makes it easy to hand over to your booth mate. However, there are still some glitches in the system, and not everything runs as smoothly as we interpreters would like. After all, our main task (and core competence) is interpreting, so we want to spend as little of our energy and concentration as possible on the technical component. I’m interested to see how the tool will develop in the near future!
